center section

This section will describe the process to build the spitfire center section of the wing. As seen in the picture to the upper left corner of the screen. Here we will show how the different parts are made. They will include front spare box, middle spar, and rear spare. We attach the ribs as needed and support structure.

Front wing main spare box.

The wing center section uses this spare box as the main support for the wing. While simple in structure, the support is a box structure, using white pine strips and both 12mm and 7mm plywood. All supports are epoxied in a sandwich structure. This structure also houses the landing gear main tree structure. We use this box to attach a pair od wind supports sandwiched, between the front of the spare and aluminum plates. Eight 5/16 th's bolts were used to attach these metal plates.

Center spare support.

The wing center section is used as an additional wing support. In this part the structure is a 1.125 inch sandwich rib. The rib has a 2 inch drilled hole which is used to install a rudder bar. All wing ribs are cut out as needed to allow the structure to accept additional 1 inch cross bars as seen in the picture. The center support wing attachment bars are also attached on this structure. Additional 1 inch plywood and .125 aluminum plates are used as additional supports.

Ribs and attachments.

The wing center section uses four ribs, three spare and a number of 1 inch square white pine cross members are used. Every part is again epoxied as a unit. This portion of the unit contains the landing gear parts, rears, shafts and bearing. The geared electrical motor and drive chains, and hand crank assembly, is all part of the center section. Because the gear retracts at a complex angle, It was critical that all friction be removed. The original design had about 30 inch pounds of torque. I was able to reduce the torque was measured as 4.3 pounds. The manual retraction is very easy to use.

I used the front of the center wing to house the gass tank.

The total center wing section is removable. You will remove the section several times during the process. Thus wireing disconnects will be needed. Static airlines and control cables have disconnect points as well as airspeed lines, and wing tip lighting and strobe lines.

Center wing attachment.

The wing center section uses this spare box as the main support for the wing. While simple in structure, the support is a box structure, using white pine strips and both 12mm and 7mm plywood. All supports are epoxied in a sandwich structure. This structure also houses the landing gear main tree structure.
